Native. This form of Kowhai was discovered in the Nelson region and was originally thought to be a form of S.microphylla but is now recognized as a distinct species. The dark green oval leaflets are longer than usual and the spring flowers are a soft lemon. Evergreen.

A compact small pendulous kowhai tree with bright yellow nectar filled flowers that appear in spring. The flowers attract the nectar seeking birds. Dainty small fern like green foliage. Easy to grow in a sunny position.

One of our largest forest canopy trees with an open habit. Puriri occurs naturally throughout the North Island from the coast to lowland forest. It has dark glossy green leaves and pinkish red flowers are produced throughout most of the year, followed by bright red berries. Frost tender, Evergreen.

Grows mainly in Northland. Large forest tree.
Suitable for warmer areas including Auckland/Northland
