Ornamental Pear. Raised in Queenstown, therefore very frost hardy. This feature tree has lovely foliage of glossy green which changes to rich shades of burgundy and green over autumn and holds well before leaf fall in winter. Pretty white blossom in spring followed by inedible fruits. PVR.

A handsome deciduous tree of noble proportions that is actually quite fast growing for an Oak. Long, oval shaped, lobed leaves that are dark green above and downy beneath. A magnificent specimen tree if given space to develop. Nice autumn colour. Deciduous.

If you are lucky enough to have the space to grow this magnificent Oak tree then seriously consider putting in more than 1 because it is just so handsome. Deep green, glossy, deeply lobed foliage in summer that turns an intense scarlet autumn. Acorns in winter. Hardy and easy to grow. Deciduous.

aka Holly or Holm Oak

Believe it or not this is actually an Oak tree and its name refers to the fact that the evergreen leaves are like those of an Ilex (Holly). Juvenile leaves tend to be silvery grey and mature to dark green with a downy under side. Very easy to grow. Est.10yr.growth.

If left to mature Quercus ilex forms a very large specimen tree however it can easily be used for hedging if clipped regularly. It grows well in an exposed position, particularly on the coast and makes a good windbreak. Valued through the ages for medicinal purposes.

aka Pin Oak

Pin Oak. One of my favourite Oaks for its graceful drooping branch formation. Handsome dark green foliage in summer that turns to fiery shades of red prior to leaf fall. A beautiful specimen tree that is hardy, tolerant and easy to grow in anything but alkaline soils. Est.10yr.growth.

The Pin Oak is more moisture tolerant than other Oaks and has a shallow rooting system. That is because its natural habitat is poorly drained flat land in eastern-central USA.

aka English Oak

The classic and much loved English Oak grows into a large, spreading tree with pale gray bark and shallowly-lobed green leaves that turn golden yellow prior to leaf fall. The perfect tree for large gardens, pond edges or paddocks. Acorns are much loved by wild-life, especially ducks. Deciduous.

The mighty Oak will live between 600 and 700 years so it really is a tree for life and is the perfect symbolic tree for families to plant to celebrate a new-born.

aka Upright English Oak

A handsome form of the ever enduring Oak that has an upright tight branch formation that grows into a natural column. Lobed green leaves that turn shades of yellow then brown before falling late in the winter. Hardy and tolerant but happiest in a sunny position. Deciduous.

The Latin 'fastigiata' literally means erect branches growing close together; columnar; upright.
