Know your Rose blooms

Hi

Size, shape and colour ..... It does matter!!!!

We are onto our third week potting now (maybe part of another week to go, to finalise some odds and ends) and have seen a huge selection of roses go past as we tie all those beautiful colour pictures onto the rose stems and then hand them over to the potting crew.
It has started me thinking that many that like roses are quite particular about the style of bloom that they would choose.

There are the types that adore florist style blooms for the want of a better description or what are generally known as Hybrid Teas (Ht).  I am going to generalise but Hybrid teas are  typically what I would  associate with that perfect  high centred bud.  They usually have a higher petal count than say floribundas (Fl) which means that they hold that gorgeous bud together for way longer than other rose flower types.

Often the Ht bush has one bloom per stem which makes them ideal for picking and combine this with a long life (due to petal count) as the buds makes them the choice for picking for the vase. Though with the amount of hybridising many modern roses exhibit both Ht and Fl characteristics which could mean Ht like blooms but several blooms per stem.

Then there are types that just love floribunda roses or some would call these cluster flowers roses as they tend to have many blooms per stem.  Generally these have less petals per bloom, but with masses of flowers per stem they make for spectacular displays in the garden.. I have to say that these roses are great for picking as well and really suit my level of flower arranging in that I can cut many  stems and put them into a vase and voila have a flower arrangement... Don't think that these don't have beautiful buds as they do, but also have  many buds per stem that all open to very pretty full flowers.

Then there are the types that are just sold on those olde world type blooms and these are typically those flowers that are rosette in form or even what I call drawn and quartered with an eye at the centre.  you could even describe some as very full and double. We could split this into a couple of groups but a hugely popular group would be the Austin or English roses. Now these Old rose look-a-likes are really modern shrubs roses that are the result of the David Austins hybridising programme of modern and old roses.  For many these do epitomise that old world style but with many modern characteristics, like health, free flowering and fragrance.

Then there are the types like the neat and tidy patios which to me are like a mini sized floribunda growing to about half to two thirds the size of a true floribunda. The patios can have either rosette style or even perfect miniature buds but generally the overall bush and bloom is much smaller than most.

Newbie roses to me and the nursery

There have been a few newbies that have been past these root trimming and labelling hands that have arrived into the nursery  and these are new to me as well as we haven't had them before.  I always get some of these new lines to see how they are going to perform and generally new roses that are coming through are exceptionally healthy.

City of Lights  has been bred by a local rose breeder who over the past few years has put out quite a few good roses in NZ. City of lights is a new floribunda with masses of lemon coloured blooms that have an alluring fragrance.

Eye Candy  Floribunda. New Release. NZ bred by Rob Somerfield Eye Candy offers plentiful clusters of soft medium pink blooms. It has a tidy compact growth habit and is an extremely healthy rose.  Deciduous.

Fire Ball Floribunda. New Release. Vermilion orange blooms with a soft yellow centre. Medium sized flowers which bloom in clusters. It is a healthy rose with a pleasant fragrance.  This rose won the Gold Star of the South Pacific in 2015. Deciduous

Hot Topic  New Release.  With a name like Hot Topic you just knew this rose had to have red or orange in it's bloom.  Well this one comes with both.  These orange blooms have a flush of red as the petals age and yellow stamens finish the picture and the gorgeous dark green leaves make the perfect compliment.

In Loving Memory  Floribunda. New to Us.  In Loving Memory gives non stop clusters of bright red flowers and lush green growth through out the season. This upright bushy plant is a top garden performer.  Awarded Gold Star of the South Pacific. As a memorial rose or just a stunning red for your planting scheme this rose. delivers.

Shangri La Hybrid Tea. This new release rose offers soft, old worldly, pink florabunda blooms that look delightful against the dark glossy green leaves. Compact by nature this rose should find a home in any garden. Deciduous
