Hi

Yahoo... and not before time, but Rockeater (a trucking company that specialises in moving plants around NZ) rocked up, early on Wednesday morning, with another huge load of bare root roses. Quite a lot of standards in this delivery, so happy we got them as they will be in short supply next season. No prizes for guessing what we have been up to this week. It's always the way, no matter how well we think we have planned the arrival of incoming plants,  more than we expect can turn up, but we have a great team so the unexpected deliveries that have arrived will be kept under wraps until they can be potted and in the meantime it's all about the roses.
There are too many roses for our team to have them nailed before the weekend but we will certainly be giving them a damn good nudge today. At some stage yesterday we had six potters, double what we have ever had before, but some of the team are off today for their weekend and so my plan is to get out there and give them a hand today.
When the plants arrive via truck they are usually just bundled and stacked. You can imagine it, lots of sticks and in the case of the roses, many very prickly sticks at that. I'd love to say that with the wave of my magic wand they all become alphabetised, labelled, root pruned and potted however the reality is it takes the team some time to achieve this. The bundles are put into name and alphabetical order, then they are checked off, scanned into our management system, and then root pruned, so that they fit into the planter bags, labelled with both our tag and a colour label, then finally handed to the potters. While some of the team got cracking on the rose receiving process, we, the potters, got on and completed the trees that we had started.

It's always great seeing the new stock come in and first off the block, that I potted, was Absolutely Fabulous, an absolutely fabulous rose. I know, sounds corny, but it's true! A classic floribunda which is a wonderfully healthy variety with bright yellow and fragrant blooms... it's definitely a must have rose, just imagine a whole bed of this bright, sunshine coloured rose.
I picked up Christchurch next which is a fairly new comer. Another floribunda with dazzling, vibrant, orange flowers, almost luminous, on a neat compact bush. As I was potting the letter C the next rose I managed to get done yesterday was one called Colorbreak, named after its unusual shade of brownish red orange. This one is also a floribunda, been around for a while being a gold medal winner in 1983
The last one I reacquainted myself with yesterday was Hamilton Gardens a more recent Hybrid tea bred by Sam McGredy 2007. A stunning rose combining a beautiful peach/apricot colour with blends of cream, peach, salmon and apricot. A popular choice and deservedly so.
I imagine that the rest of the team got the remaining A's B's and C's done but I am off out there now to see if can nail a whole lot more before the weekend so that there is more out there for you to come and look at.
Don't forget that this weekend is the first of our rose information sharing events and so if you need advice re pruning or just a general chat about roses then check out the times below and come on out.. if you haven't registered then no worry, just us getting some idea of potential numbers, so feel free to just come on out.
You can find all the dates on our facebook page. Here's hoping it's a lovely fine weekend for everyone to enjoy their gardens and hopefully we'll see you here.
Have a great weekend
Cheers Lloyd, Tony and the Wairere team
