Gooseberry has long been cultivated for use in pies and jellies and has a high content of Vitamin A and potassium.  You will know the berries are fully ripe in summer (Dec - Jan), when they are easy to pull off the bush.  Any surplus freezes well.  Plant in morning sun or part shade. Deciduous.
The Gooseberry is hardy and in fact loves a cold winter however be aware that new spring growth can be damaged by frost.  Gooseberries like a nice layer of mulch or compost around their shallow roots.  When pruning remember they fruit on older wood.
