A very useful little native for use as a ground cover or to drape over the edge of a container. Creeping soft stems of small maroon coloured foliage quickly forms a dense colourful mat. Happiest growing in a sunny well drained position. Will even do well in gravel. Evergreen.

NZ's iconic native conifer. Slow growing but well worth the wait for the tree to mature into its stately form. When juvenile the foliage tends to have copper bronze tones but as the tree ages green is the more dominant colour. Protect from frost when young. One to plant for your grand children! Evergreen

Outstanding NZ native that forms a handsome spreading tree. Large, glossy, light green dissected foliage. Sprays of rusty red woolly flowers appear in summer followed by scarlet berries with jet black seeds. Will grow in quite exposed conditions but protect from harsh frost. Evergreen.

Native. A fabulous foliage plant ideal for group planting. Silvery, strap like foliage that is attractively flushed with red and bronze tones. The red colour intensifies in cold weather. Tolerant of sun or part shade but not tolerant of 'wet feet'.

Astelia look their best when group planted and they are a fabulous easy care architectural container plant.

It is found only in the north of the North Island, to Kawhia on the west and East Cape on the east. Tarairi likes a good moist, free-draining soil. Although it tolerates shade, its form is fuller if grown in full sun. It will only tolerate a light frost, and is best provided with a wind break when young.

Has a classically pyramidal shape with striking tiers of branches that over time change to form a spreading canopy. Suitable as a speciman tree.

Native Fern. This fern earned its name from the attractive crown of bright green radiating fronds. The fronds are long, narrow and segmented and form a rosette. Gradually spreads. Loves moisture and shade with protection from harsh frost. Perennial.

Native wetland grass. A bright green grass that forms a large clump. With age, a trunk-like mass of old leaves forms so the grass seems perched on a tall mound. Good for planting in damp to wet areas but will tolerate short periods of dryness. Plant around ponds as shelter for birds. Evergreen

This native 'grass' is really tough and hardy tolerating cold winds and almost any soil. The brick-orange foliage looks very graceful as it waves and dances in the wind. Ideal for planting in large drifts. If the clumps become a little untidy just chop back hard for renewed vigour. Evergreen.

Clematis. One of the loveliest NZ Native plants, suitable for trellises, walls or rambling joyfully through trees. Festoons of large, starry, pure white blooms with golden anthers appear in spring, followed by silken seed heads. Keep roots cool with a nice layer of mulch. Evergreen.

The red native Kaka Beak is a fast growing semi-evergreen shrub with fern-like leaves that decorate the arching branches. In spring and summer suspended clusters of large 'parrot beak' shaped flowers in bright red appear. The nectar filled blooms are loved by birds. Protect from harsh frost.

This beautiful native, Kaka Beak is a fast growing, hardy, semi-evergreen native with bright scarlet parrot beak shaped flowers from late spring - into early Summer. Very attractive to birds. Likes full sun and partial shade, fertile soils that are free draining.

NZ Native. This form was discovered on cliffs near Hawera. It is a ground hugging native that forms a tight mat of small narrow olive green leaves. Excellent landscape plant for covering large areas of ground. Hardy, tolerant of cold and wind. Evergreen.

This striking evergreen plant has vivid red foliage with burgundy/chocolate brown markings. This makes an amazing contrast plant, stunning in pots, the garden and works well in mass plantings. A real head turner.

Pacific Sunset will benefit from a hair cut every now and then. This is best done around about February on a warm dry day.

A tough, hardy shrub discovered by the late Mike Geenty in the Waikato. A top plant for hedging or topiary. Attractive olive-green leaves, small yellow flowers in spring followed by red berries that birds love. Tolerates regular trimming. Presented here as a topiary standard. Evergreen.

Corokia are tolerant of coastal conditions and thrive in just about any soil though their preference is for an open sunny site. Very quick to establish. Can be grown in a container.

This hebe was developed by a Waikato Nursery as part of the Regal Series of Hebes and named for the Duchess of Cambridge. New leaf shoots are burgundy red in colour, maturing to deep olive green. Masses of purple flowers develop through summer. Trim back after flowering to keep tidy. PVR eligible.

'Sutherlandii' is a neat, compact, rounded, evergreen shrub. It has grey-green, oval leaves and in late spring to early summer, is covered with spikes of small white flowers.

This Hebe is probably more desirable for the attractive foliage rather than the flowers. Gray leaves, margined with red form a neat little cushion. The red edge is more showy in cold weather. For those of you interested in the flowers these open to white from pink buds. Evergreen

This handsome evergreen native forms a slender, erect tapering tree with deep green leaves that have saw-toothed margins. In spring, reddish bottle-brush like flowers appear which provide a nectar feast for native birds. Grows well in average soil in sun or part shade. Avoid harsh frost.

This little Iris has to be one of my favourite NZ natives as it has such dainty white "butterfly" flowers. The narrow sword like leaves form a strong clump, the flowers appear in summer followed by ornamental seed pods. Easy to grow in average soil in a sunny position. Evergreen.

Native. An excellent form of NZ's 'Christmas Tree' that grows with a clean straight trunk and has few aerial roots, making it highly suitable for street planting or the home garden. Leathery green leaves and, of course, beautiful red blooms in summer. Very tolerant of coastal conditions but not harsh frost.

Did you know that the name 'Pohutukawa' means 'drenched with spray'? Referring of course to the many beautiful trees growing in precarious positions on NZ's coastline.

An erect variety with shiny, pointed, dark green foliage. This looks stunning in the hot months of Summer with beautiful red-scarlet flowers en-mass. An excellent coastal tree as tolerant of wind and salt spray. Evergreen. Frost tender.

A cross between Southern Rata and Pohutukawa that incorporates the frost tolerance of the Rata with the large profuse flowers of the Pohutukawa.

A wonderful little compact shrub with attractive silver-green foliage. Pittorsporums love well drained fertile soil but are remarkably tolerant plants and will adapt to less than ideal conditions. They are hardy and generally healthy.

Whilst this evergreen native tree will eventually reach 30m it won't happen in your life time as it is very slow growing. A highly valued native with a special place in Maori history. Dense, bronze green, stiff narrow leaves adorn a handsome pyramidal tree. Estimated height after 10 years, 6m.

Native. A handsome specimen tree for sun or part shade. The stiff narrow leaves are a beautiful golden shade and complement the reddish brown bark. Slow growing, hardy and tolerant of all conditions except wet 'feet'. Height given is 10 year estimate. Evergreen.

Totara were a valuable timer source in early NZ. Maori also used large specimens to craft their war canoes. The peeling bark was used for roofing material and for fashioning food baskets.

Native. Dainty deep green leaves that quickly form a low mat of tight foliage. In spring and summer myriads of starry shaped white flowers dance above the foliage, followed by fleshy red berries. Plant in sun or part shade in well drained soil that does not completely dry out in summer. Evergreen.

A fabulous NZ native that will add some real architectural drama to your planting scheme or look equally fabulous in a container. The juvenile foliage is long and narrow with a sharp saw toothed edge. The grey blotched foliage combines well with other colours. Easy to grow. Evergreen.

An attractive evergreen native with an upright columnar growth habit and narrow fingers of foliage. The new leaves emerge golden yellow and gradually change to a dark green. Very striking in a container or for accent planting. Must be protected from afternoon sun and harsh frost.

An elegant graceful form of the beloved Nikau palm. Long fan like rich green leaves extend upright from the shiny bulbous butt at the top of the smooth trunk. Small pale pink flowers from December to February. Must be planted in shade. Evergreen.

Iconic native plant, the Nikau Palm is ideal for the tropical look in your garden. Long fan like rich green leaves extend upright from the shiny bulbous butt at the top of the smooth trunk. I suppose you could say the overall effect is that of a giant feather duster! Happiest in shade. Evergreen.

One of our largest forest canopy trees with an open habit. Puriri occurs naturally throughout the North Island from the coast to lowland forest. It has dark glossy green leaves and pinkish red flowers are produced throughout most of the year, followed by bright red berries. Frost tender, Evergreen.

Grows mainly in Northland. Large forest tree.
Suitable for warmer areas including Auckland/Northland
