Native. This low growing vigorous Coprosma creates a mat of rich rounded glossy sage green leaves with cream edges and gold coloured stems. This little Coprosma was discovered growing on the South Wellington coast so you know how tough and hardy it is to have survived there. Strong red/orange coloured leaves and stems. Tolerant of wind, salt and dry periods. Excellent ground cover that is happy to be trimmed. Evergreen.

A stunning hybrid form of NZ's Cabbage Tree bred by the Jury family. Long, cascading strap like leaves of deep maroon form an attractive clump. Looks great in the garden and fabulous in a container. Sprays of small fragrant flowers in late spring-summer. Evergreen.

This 'Cabbage Tree' seldom forms a trunk and remains a nice compact clump. Looks good planted in groups of 3 or more and is happiest planted in the sun.

This is a great little shrub that will grow just about anywhere, even dry, windy difficult sites. Narrow green leaves and a 'zig zag' branch pattern certainly add interest as do the bright yellow flowers that appear in spring. Red berries follow the flowers that will attract birds to your garden. A moderately fast growing tree with large glossy green leaves. Large fleshy drupes in December, small creamy green flowers in September. Very hardy withstanding strong winds, coastal conditions and drought. Resents wet feet and great as a specimen tree

aka Silver Tree Fern, Ponga, Punga

Native. NZ's iconic national symbol the 'Silver Fern' is relatively easy to grow in a semi-shaded position with humus rich soil and protection from harsh frost. Forms an erect trunk topped off with a crown of green fronds with distinctive silver-white undersides. Evergreen.

It is important that your 'Silver Fern' does not completely dry out in long hot summers. As you will be sitting under it for shade remember to give it a drink when you're having a cold one!

Native. Soft and delicate looking fronds spread horizontally from the crown reaching 2-2.5m in length. The trunk is covered in chestnut coloured scales. Plant in a sheltered position in moist humus rich soil. Water during dry spells. Evergreen

NZ Blueberry. A lovely native perennial that has green sword like foliage that forms a clump. In summer dainty stems of pale blue flowers appear, these are followed by the main act which is the display of blue berries. Happiest in dappled light but will tolerate some sun. Evergreen.

Native. This is the most common tree fern found in forests throughout New Zealand. It is a medium sized tree fern., fastest growing and tolerates a wide range of conditions. The fronds are harsh to touch and are dark green above and paler on the underside. Water well. Evergreen.

Native. This shade loving herbaceous ground cover also loves the damp. Found at the base of waterfalls and along streams and gullies so plant where consistent moisture is available. Filtered light will bring out the bronze tones but full shade is enjoyed by this lovely native perennial. Looks great co planted with ferns. Evergreen.

Native. A selected form of the ever popular Griselinia. Gorgeous, broad, glossy green foliage with attractive wavy margins. Ideal background shrub but at its best when used as a hedge. Tolerant of just about any planting conditions including coastal. Very tidy and well groomed. Evergreen.

With bright green tightly packed foliage that forms a natural mound this little Hebe is great for planting in groups to add interest and contrast to planting schemes. Dainty white flowers appear in summer but they are not the main feature. Plant in sun or part shade in well drained soil. Evergreen.

This Hebe is probably more desirable for the attractive foliage rather than the flowers. Gray leaves, margined with red form a neat little cushion. The red edge is more showy in cold weather. For those of you interested in the flowers these open to white from pink buds. Evergreen

Native. An attractive, evergreen native tree. The green oval leaves have a serrated edge and purple underside. This is highlighted as the leaves rustle in the breeze. Perfumed, star shaped white flowers in summer. Easy to grow as long as protected from harsh frost. Evergreen.

Native. Interesting and attractive little ground-cover with fresh green, flat, fern like foliage that sometimes has a hint of bronze. Quite fast growing in sun or part shade and tolerant of coastal conditions. Sometimes used as a 'now mow' lawn substitute. Evergreen.

Native. The NZ Iris is an attractive clump forming perennial with spears of fresh green foliage. In summer white 'butterfly' flowers dance above the leaves on stiff, wiry stems. These are followed by ornamental seed pods. Well worth planting and easy to grow. Evergreen.

This little Iris has to be one of my favourite NZ natives as it has such dainty white "butterfly" flowers. The narrow sword like leaves form a strong clump, the flowers appear in summer followed by ornamental seed pods. Easy to grow in average soil in a sunny position. Evergreen.

Kawaka, New Zealand cedar. Slow growing N.Z native. Handsome, symmetrical, pyramidal tree with bright-green, scale-like leaves. Superb as a neat-growing screen, for breaking up dark greenery, or for lining driveways. Evergreen tree that grows at a moderate rate to reach 3m in 10 years.

aka Wharangi

Forms a rounded, large bush of shiny, lime-green leaves. Grows well in sandy soils sheltered from the worst of the coastal winds. Tolerates light frosts. Small, yellow-green flowers from late-winter to late-spring. Brown fruit are produced from late-spring to early-autumn.

Once ripe, the fruit open to reveal a black seed that birds love.

The most floriferous of the olearias. In spring this shrub is smothered in large clusters of white flowers. Olearia cheesemanii or tree daisy is an evergreen NZ native. It is a medium growing bushy shrub with narrow pointed thin leathery dark green leaves. In spring large panicles of daisy like flowers appear. Thrives well in windy conditions. Great for hedging, very clippable, or use in boarder or shrub garden. Evergreen.

Pittorsporums love well drained fertile soil but are remarkably tolerant plants and will adapt to less than ideal conditions. They are hardy and generally healthy.
