Gardenias are gross feeders - meaning that like me they like lots of tucker. Regular liquid feeding will keep them healthy and happy or side dress with slow release fertilizer.

This is slow growing and forms a very large bulb. Individual corms have a mild sweet taste (especially when roasted) and are less intense than regular Garlic. Plant in June and harvest Dec. Plant no deeper than 2 cloves depth. Feed well balanced NPK fertiliser and water regularly.

Garlic loves a sunny, well drained spot in fertile soil. Once harvested, around Christmas time, leave to dry in a warm, sunny spot until the leaves wrinkle and turn brownish. Then take the leaves off and store your bulbs whole in a cool airy place until required. NB Elephant Garlic does not store for as long as regular Garlic but once you get the taste of it that shouldn't be a problem. This is a hard necked variety.

A culinary soft neck Garlic with a premium flavour. Forms large, firm, white skinned cloves. Companion plant as aphid deterrent. Plant in June, in a sunny, well drained spot ('pointy' end up); harvest December. Feed monthly with a general purpose fertiliser, water regularly. Reliable cropper, easy to grow.

Once you have dug your Garlic up around Christmas time (6 months after planting). Leave to dry in a warm dry spot until the leaves die down. Then break the leaves off and store whole in the pantry until you are ready to use. Home grown fresh Garlic has an exquisite sweet flavour that is hard to beat. Bon appetit.

A must to have in every home garden. Great for making pies like Gandma use too. A heavy bearing and disease resistant gooseberry with large flavourful fruit that can be used for culinary purposes or eaten fresh when fully ripe. Fruit ripens Nov - Jan Deciduous.

The Gooseberry is hardy and in fact loves a cold winter however be aware that new spring growth can be damaged by frost. Gooseberries like a nice layer of mulch or compost around their shallow roots. When pruning remember they fruit on older wood.

Gypsum improves soil quality to achieve healthy, vibrant gardens and lawns. Breaks up clay, loosens hard and compacted soil. Improves soil drainage and enables penetration of air, water and nutrients to plant roots. Gypsum also adds calcium to the soil which is great for avocado's as they are acid soil lovers and therefore no lime can be used.

Avocados are litter feeders, with most of their ‘feeder’ roots in the top 10 cm of soil and in the natural organic mulch under the tree. The use of gypsum as a source of calcium helps to give stability to the organic components of the soil. The sulphur content of gypsum helps to prevent the loss of valuable nitrogen from this organic layer.

Prune your Hebe 'Otari Delight' lightly after flowering to encourage new growth. This Hebe was found as a seedling in Otari-Wilton's Bush in Wellington hence the name.

A lovely neat and tidy Hebe that always looks like it has just been clipped hence the common name of Topiarist's Hebe. The dainty grey-green leaves on short stems form a rounded compact mound. Use in groups or as an ideal contrast plant. Likes the sun and well drained soil. Hardy and evergreen.

Hebe Topiaria will occasionally flower in summer with little white flowers that are rather inconspicuous. Its value is as a foliage shrub and is highly enough thought of to have received an Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society.

Blue Oat Grass. Highly desirable perennial 'grass' that has arching, blue-grey, needles of foliage that form a robust clump. Panicles of cream 'oat' like flowers appear in summer. Hardy and easy to grow as long as your soil is well drained. Looks great as an edging or mass planted. Evergreen.

Though this is generally a neat and tidy 'grass' it can be sheared back to encourage new growth if it starts to look a bit scruffy. This is usually done in late winter - just before spring.

This specimen tree from Brazil is a visual delight when in full flower. In late spring-summer masses of mauve-blue tubular flowers smother the tree followed by decorative seed pods. The ferny green foliage is semi-evergreen when temperatures are cool. Protect from frost.

Jacarandas like a warm sheltered position and well drained soil. In their native Brazil they are considered a tropical evergreen and in NZ they grow really well in warmer parts of the country like the Bay of Plenty. They can be grown in cooler areas if protected from frost whilst young.

Round Kumquat. A hybrid variety with thick, rigid, dark green foliage and fragrant, white flowers in spring. The rounded fruit are good quality with a balance of sweet and acidic taste - the peel is sweet, the flesh has a sharp taste - the whole fruit can be eaten. Ripens March-April. Evergreen.

A very hardy evergreen clumping perennial. It has long strappy foliage that is a beautiful dark green and produces violet-purple flower spikes from mid Spring through to Autumn. Great for mass planting or borders. Easy to grow in sun or part shade. Evergreen.

This Aussie perennial is ideal for group planting in sun or part shade. Fine needles of lime-green foliage form an attractive clump and look good all year round. Little stems of yellow fragrant flowers in summer. Tolerates poor soil but likes good drainage. Easy to grow. Evergreen.

A good choice for the home garden as the nuts drop when they are ripe, making harvesting the yummy nuts easier. With a high oil content they are an early season variety but does better with another variety to pollinate. With pink flowers Spring and Summer the nuts are ready Autumn through Winter. Evergreen.

aka Queensland Nut

A NZ bred macadamia producing good crops of large nuts with good flavour over spring. Leaves are small with few prickles. Best cross pollination with another variety. This is a self shedding variety. Attractive evergreen tree that needs frost protection.

To ensure good cross pollination it is recommended that two varieties are planted together. NB Macadamias are toxic to dogs so choose your planting spot with care.

A very handsome evergreen specimen tree with dark green glossy leaves that have a brown under-felt. The flowers are magnificent: Cupped, creamy, fragrant and large. They appear in late summer. Easy to grow and quite hardy. Matures to a pyramidal shape, worthy of the space to grow unhindered.
