Many pears are self pollinating, but yields will improve with a pollinator. The most essential factor for pear pollination is that the two trees must flower at the same time, this varies from region to region and season to season. Pears are harvested between January and May annually, fruit is picked when they come off the tree easily when twisted and the skin feels slightly soft.
Pears that have been grafted as doubles have been specially selected for their ability to pollinate each other.
