Pecans grow to attractive large trees and the nuts have a sweet, creamy texture and are a good source of calcium, magnesium and potassium.
Pecans grow in most regions of NZ, and do best in a warm sheltered position with good airflow and have been grown here for over 100 years. They are wind-pollinated and require specific pollinators to ensure nuts set and grow - pecans are monoecious (having both male and female parts) and but the male flowers (catkins) rarely shed pollen when the females of the same variety are receptive.
Grafted trees will bear fruit in 4-7 years and nuts falls from the tree and harvested from the ground; nuts can last up to 2 years after harvesting.
