Although some people regard shrubs as miniature trees, they have completely different growth habits. Some can sucker themselves and send creeping underground stems which root and thereby propagate themselves, whilst others renew themselves after hard pruning.

From broadleaf evergreens to deciduous shrubs, from flowering shrubs to those valued chiefly for their foliage or twigs, the diversity amongst this group of plants is infinite. When considering creating a feature or focal point with a shrub, take into consideration its habits – if you want it to retain its emphasis in the design, make sure it is an evergreen. If you want a shrub to make a splash of colour that is ongoing, check the length of the flowering period.
Some shrubs are best planted in groups for bold effect. Plant in groups of odd numbers – 3, 5, 7. There is a wide range of shrubs that are quick and dense growing and that are therefore ideal for use as hedges. The native species particularly, lend themselves to this purpose. Try Corokia, Griselinia, Pittosporum varieties.
Small, low-growing shrubs such as lavender and thyme are often termed sub-shrubs; a natural plant community dominated by shrubs is called a shrubland. An area of cultivated shrubs in a park or garden is known as a shrubbery.

Large, frilly, double pink flowers with a gorgeous perfume will delight you when they emerge in spring. The fresh green summer foliage puts on a spectacular autumn display prior to leaf fall. Easy to grow in sun or part shade and quite hardy. Plant in deep acid soil for best results.

aka Deciduous Azalea
Ilam Azalea. Large deep golden yellow flowers in large ball-shaped trusses bloom during November. This larger shrub is an excellent flowerer and also has good autumn colours. Prefers good free-draining soils and will handle sun or semi-shade.

This spreading prostrate evergreen produces tight clusters of powder-blue flowers. These contrast nicely with the small lime green leaves that are splashed a darker green. This plant needs a well drained warm site in full sun position. Once established it requires little attention other than a light pruning after flowering.

aka Ake Ake
Native. Ake Ake. A no fuss evergreen foliage shrub that can be used for hedging or background planting. The slightly wavy leaves are shaded purple and bronze and will have better colour if not over-fed or pampered. Will grow just about anywhere except full shade. Evergreen.

Spreading Guinea Flower. A prostrate and spreading groundcover shrub with yellow flowers in autumn and spring. Grows best in full sun and well drained soil. Ideal for coastal gardens. Perennial.

aka Mophead Hydrangea
Mophead. One of our favourite Hydrangeas. Gorgeous large white flower heads that open from soft lime green buds. Lovely to pick. Best planted in dappled light in soil that does not completely dry out in summer. Deciduous.

This is a top 10 shrub which not only looks good it tastes good as well! The leathery dark green foliage is highly aromatic and popular for cooking. This same foliage clips extremely well making the 'Bay' perfect for hedging and topiary work. Presented here as a standard. Easy to grow. Evergreen.

aka Fern Leaf Lavender
Lavandula. Fern Leaf Lavender. Originating in Australia this is a slightly different lavender with fine deeply divided grey leaves. The flowers appear for long periods and are coloured and intense violet blue. Likes the sun and protection from frost. Just a bit different. Evergreen.
