This popular apple is very well named because it is indeed golden and very scrum-delicious. The flesh is crisp and juicy with a sweet honey flavour. Lovely eaten fresh but can be cooked. Highly productive and ripe towards the end of autumn. Deciduous.

Everyone knows this classic bright green apple with its tangy flavour and crisp white flesh. Bake it, sauce it, slice it, caramelise it, but most of all, simply bite into it. Keeps well. A productive regular tip bearer maturing later in April. Suited to most climates. Deciduous.

Aka Pink Lady. Discovered in a Hawke's Bay Orchard this beautiful looking apple has bright red skin. Inside the cream flesh has a lovely combination of sweet and tart flavours. Ripens around April. PVR.

Tomcot has large fruit which have a red blush over orange skin. The flesh is of excellent quality with an intense apricot flavour, ready to eat around January. Pretty pink blossom in early spring. Plant in a sunny, sheltered well drained position. Suits cooler climate. Summer prune. Deciduous.

Hybrid Tea. From NZ Breeder Rob Somerfield comes an exceptionally beautiful rose. The large blooms are tightly packed with petals and are toned soft cream with blush pink edges. Glossy deep green foliage that shows good disease resistance. Repeats well from summer to autumn. PVR

Winter Rose. This range of Hellebores has a tight petaloid forming around the centre of each flower, which fall off once the flower is pollinated - the flower is then single. Very pretty and free flowering winter-spring. Plant in humus rich soil for best results. Perennial.

Clifton Homestead N.Z.'s premier grower of Hellebores tells us that these hybrids will tolerate some sun but probably best to still give them some shade in the afternoon. The colour range is mainly from white through to pink.

This was the first Hellebore I ever purchased many years ago and I still find it hard to resist today - it is really lovely in full flower at what is usually a dull time of year.

aka Yoshino Cherry or Tokyo Cherry

A graceful tree with attractively arching branches that are smothered in blush white single blooms in early spring. The overall effect is one of subtle beauty. The flowers have a delicate fragrance often likened to almonds. Good autumn colour prior to leaf fall. Deciduous.

This tree was thought of as a species but is now thought to be an ancient hybrid of P.speciosa and P.subhirtella. No matter the origins it is a beauty. There are mass plantings in Washington DC and it is also a very popular street tree in Christchurch.
